A Brief History of the Southern Praline

The origins date back to 17th-century France, where candied almonds coated in caramelized sugar were a favorite delicacy. When French settlers arrived in Louisiana and later Georgia, they adapted the recipe using the more readily available and flavorful pecan. Over time, the Southern praline became its own unique dessert—sweeter, creamier, and deeply rooted in local tradition.

Savannah pralines, in particular, have earned a reputation for their rich texture and generous use of fresh Georgia pecans. At River Street Sweets, Savannah’s original candy store, we continue that legacy with our time-honored family recipe.

Handcrafted the Old-Fashioned Way

Our pralines are still made by hand in small batches every day, using simple, high-quality ingredients: sugar, cream, butter, and pecans. We cook the mixture in copper kettles, then scoop and shape each piece by hand on a marble slab—just like candy makers did generations ago.
